PEOPLE POWER! Potrero and San Diego Activists Stopped Blackwater from building mercenary training facility in Potrero!
            After over a year of struggle that included demonstrations in San Diego and Potrero and a successful recall vote of the Potrero Planning Board Members who had voted in favor of Blackwater's project, Blackwater announced on March 7, 2008, that they were withdrawing their request for a land use permit. 
               Blackwater's letter to the San Diego County Department of Planning and Land Use cited as the reason  that the "proposed site plan simply does not meet our business objectives at this time."  Blackwater VP Brian Bonfiglio also told the San Diego Union Tribune that the protests had no influence on their decision.  (Read more here)

Scores of American troops are deserting - even from the front line in Iraq. But where have they gone? And why isn't the US Army after them? Peter Laufer tracked down four of the deserters.

They are the US troops in Iraq to whom the American administration prefers not to draw attention. They are the deserters - those who have gone AWOL from their units and not returned, risking imprisonment and opprobrium.
